NRF Encourages Science Communication During Inaugural Science Communication and Diplomacy Conference

The inaugural Science Communication and Diplomacy Conference, held on October 15-16, 2024, under the theme “Effective Science Communication for Technological Innovation and Adoption in Kenya,” brought together a dynamic mix of scientists, communicators, policymakers, and stakeholders. The event aimed to tackle the pressing need for improved communication between the scientific community and the public to ensure that innovations are understood, accepted, and implemented in ways that address real-world challenges.
A key discussion point centred on the effective dissemination of research outcomes. The consensus was clear: scientific findings must be communicated in ways that resonate with local communities and are tailored to address their specific needs. The discussions highlighted the significance of clear, evidence-based communication in influencing policy and facilitating the adoption of technological innovations by society.
One of the central themes was co-production — a collaborative approach that involves scientists, policymakers, communicators, and communities working together from the very beginning of research. This method ensures that scientific discoveries are not only practical but also accessible and actionable, with the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.
During the conference, Prof. Dickson Andala, CEO of the National Research Fund (NRF), emphasized the power of collaboration in turning research into impactful societal change. He noted that NRF is committed to enhancing science communication to ensure research findings are not only accessible but also influential, particularly when it comes to informing public policy and reaching wider audiences. “Science is not complete until it’s communicated,” was a key takeaway from the event, underscoring that effective communication is critical to driving innovation, transparency, and societal progress.
By closing the gap between scientific discovery and practical application, the NRF continues to play a pivotal role in ensuring that research addresses real-world challenges and informs decision-making at all levels.
