NRF Supports Sustainable Development at Tharaka University’s Tree Planting Exercise and 3rd Graduation Ceremony

Tharaka University marked two significant events on 5th and 6th December 2024, combining academic achievement with environmental sustainability. The university hosted a tree planting exercise on 5th December, followed by its 3rd graduation ceremony on 6th December, drawing attention to its commitment to both education and environmental conservation.

The tree planting exercise, aimed at enhancing ecological balance and beautifying the campus, attracted widespread participation from students, faculty, and the local community. This initiative aligns with the Kenyan government’s goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 to combat deforestation and mitigate the effects of climate change.

A total of 100 indigenous tree seedlings, including Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Tamarind (Tamarindus indica), were planted. These species were carefully selected for their adaptability to the local climate and their positive environmental impact, including improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, and fostering biodiversity.

NRF’s Involvement in the Initiative

The National Research Fund (NRF) was a key participant in the tree planting exercise. Staff from NRF, as part of their 2024/2025 performance contract, pledged to plant and care for at least 30 trees annually, highlighting the organization’s commitment to environmental sustainability. NRF partnered with Tharaka University, reinforcing their collective commitment to environmental conservation.

The day began with an educational briefing led by environmental experts who stressed the importance of tree planting in promoting sustainability. Participants were organized into groups, with each team assigned specific areas of the campus to plant the trees. The exercise concluded with a symbolic watering of the newly planted trees, emphasizing the long-term commitment to nurturing the environment.

Celebrating Academic Achievement

The tree planting exercise was followed by Tharaka University’s 3rd graduation ceremony on 6th December, which celebrated the academic success of 941 students. This was the first graduation ceremony presided over by Prof. Ratemo Michieka, who was recently appointed Chancellor of Tharaka University and Chair of NRF’s Board of Trustees. His leadership in both education and sustainability efforts at the university marked a significant milestone in the institution’s growth.

The ceremony was graced by several prominent figures, including Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, EGH, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Peter K. Muriungi, and Prof. Dickson Andala, CEO of NRF, who was part of the academic procession. Their speeches emphasized the importance of sustainability and community development. Prof. Muriungi highlighted the symbolic significance of the trees planted earlier in the day, stating, “Neem and Tamarind, the trees we have planted, symbolize life, resilience, and sustainability. They will improve our campus environment and serve as living laboratories for our students.”

Looking Towards a Greener Future

NRF’s participation in the two-day event underscores its ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable development and higher education in Kenya. Through its active involvement in both the tree planting exercise and the graduation ceremony, NRF showcased its dedication to fostering an environment that promotes intellectual, environmental, and community growth.

The events at Tharaka University were a resounding success, blending academic achievement with a tangible commitment to sustainability. The collaboration between NRF and Tharaka University demonstrated a holistic approach to education, one that extends beyond the classroom to include environmental stewardship and social responsibility. This initiative serves as a reminder of the significant role that research institutions and organizations like NRF play in shaping a greener, more sustainable future for Kenya.
