ABOUT THE HACKATHON

Participate in this Year's Competitive Hackathon

The National Research Fund has organised this Hackathon in line with the objective of promoting CyberSecurity Research and Innovation in Kenya.

What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event where individuals, usually programmers, come together to collaborate intensively on software projects within a short timeframes. During a hackathon, participants work on ideas, develop prototypes, or solve specific problems, typically with a focus on innovation and creativity.

NRF 2024 Hackathon

In this year's hackathon, the NRF's main focus is on promoting Cybersecurity Research and innovation. Competitors will showcase their skills and compete to win the different prizes offered in the hackathon.

Event Schedules

Below are the order of events for the Hackathon

Hackers are expected to arrive and complete the necessary registration tasks. Group registration and account provision will be done at this stage.

Location: Safari Park Hotel

Hackathon is officialy started, competitions commence and the groups get to tackle the first set of challenges against each other.

The height of the competition. Stakes are raised and the challenges are increased in difficulty. Overnight grit is achieved.

Teammates are expected to finalize on their innovation/coding projects as described in the hackathon

How to participate in the 2024 NRF CyberSecurity Hackathon

Who is eligible to participate?
  • Current undergraduate students taking a degree or diploma in IT / Computer Science / CyberSecurity / Digital Forensics
  • At least up to 30 professionals who graduated one year ago with an undergraduate Degree / Diploma in IT /Computer Science / CyberSecurity / Digital Forensics


  • Participants will be expected to form groups of up to FIVE members with diversified skill sets.

    There will be prizes for the winners at the group level as outlined below:

  • Top 1st Winner: Ksh 600,000 (For the group) + Laptop for each member
  • 1st Runners Up: Ksh 400,000 (For the group) + Tablet for each member
  • 2nd Runners Up: Ksh 250,000 (For the group) + Smart Watches

  • Research and Innovation:
  • Best Innovation: Ksh 200,000 (For the group)
  • 1st Runners Up: Ksh 150,000 (For the group)
  • 2nd Runners Up: Ksh 100,000 (For the group)
