NRF at the CGIAR Science Week 2025: Strengthening Regional Collaboration for Resource Mobilization

The National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya made significant strides at the CGIAR Science Week 2025, with Chief Executive Officer Prof. Dickson Andala moderating a key panel session at the event held at the UN Campus in Gigiri, Nairobi. The panel, centered on the theme “Sustainable Funding for National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS),” aimed at strengthening regional collaboration for resource mobilization.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Andala highlighted the unanticipated challenge of food insecurity in Africa, a reality exacerbated by rapid population growth. He emphasized that the most reliable method for securing funding for National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) is through sustained government investment. Additionally, attracting private sector investments through innovative research outputs and strategic partnerships was underscored as crucial for long-term sustainability in agricultural research.

Prof. Andala also spotlighted the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization’s (KALRO) transformative contributions to the global economy. He noted that key research outputs from KALRO, such as advancements in cow breeding, are now being implemented internationally, reinforcing Kenya’s role as a significant player in agricultural research.

In recognition of NRF’s contributions, Apollinaire Djikeng, Director General of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), lauded the NRF for its support in funding agricultural research initiatives. ILRI, a prominent beneficiary of NRF research grants, has made notable strides in advancing agricultural practices with the financial backing from NRF.

The session brought together thought leaders, policymakers, and experts, who shared valuable insights into enhancing the funding mechanisms for NARS. Key proposals included lobbying for political goodwill to increase government support for NARS, encouraging joint resource mobilization instead of competing for limited funding, embracing agricultural innovations, and reconsidering funding methods in response to the emerging challenges posed by climate change.

As the five-day CGIAR Science Week continues, it has drawn leading scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders from the agriculture, climate, and health sectors. With the event entering its fourth day tomorrow, discussions remain focused on addressing the pressing challenges in agricultural research and ensuring sustainable funding for the future.
