Sowing Seeds of Hope: NRF Leads Tree Growing Initiative at Turkana University College

On April 11th, 2025, the National Research Fund (NRF), in partnership with Turkana University College (TUC), led a transformative tree growing exercise at the heart of Turkana County. Graced by Prof. Ratemo Michieka, Chairperson of the NRF Board of Trustees, and hosted by TUC’s leadership Council Chairperson, Dr Salim Ndemo, and College Princpal, Prof. George Cheminingw’a, the event was part of Kenya’s national campaign to grow 15 billion trees by 2032.

Themed around environmental stewardship, resilience, and research-informed action, the initiative saw the NRF donate 1,000 seedlings to support local reforestation efforts. Prof. Michieka highlighted the occasion as more than a tree planting event—it was a platform for empowering the next generation of scientists and leaders with climate-smart values.

“We are growing more than trees—we are growing awareness, responsibility, and a commitment to a climate-resilient future,” Prof. Michieka remarked.

Having previously served as Director General at NEMA and as a scholar of environmental systems in Kenya, Prof. Michieka emphasized the importance of locally driven conservation efforts that integrate traditional knowledge and scientific research. He urged TUC students and faculty to translate their knowledge into long-term ecological action.

Dr Ndemo, College’s Counicl Chair, lauded NRF for the noble initiative to move out conform zones and reach the Turkana Community- Arid and Semi-Arid region which is more deserving for this campaign. “This tree growing initiative is more than symbolic—it reflects our institution’s commitment to leading climate solutions from the frontlines. Turkana must not be left behind in the journey toward a greener, more sustainable Kenya.” He said.

This exercise is part of a broader strategy by the NRF to promote research-linked sustainability activities in higher education institutions and across counties. The organization remains committed to catalyzing innovation, knowledge transfer, and collaborative environmental action across Kenya.

“As an academic institution rooted in a fragile ecosystem, we recognize our responsibility to blend research with action. Today’s exercise is a lesson in stewardship for our students and a step toward restoring the environmental balance of our region. ”Prof. George Cheminingw’a, Principal, Turkana University College:

The event brought together university staff and students, county government officials, media representatives, and members of the Turkana community—all united by a shared mission: to restore degraded landscapes and contribute to the national climate action agenda.

As we dig into the future, one seedling at a time, NRF continues to champion partnerships that not only advance research but also safeguard our planet for generations to come.
